A c1920s cabinet card portrait — a child seated stiffly for the camera — is transformed with hand-inked linework tracing the room around her, and a dimensional gold snake coiled where a halo might sit. Found stamped text below her reads like a message surfacing from a dream: "in my dream the angel smiled and said every child carries a wild thing."
The snake was placed intuitively, the way the found text always is in this body of work — and once set, the piece seemed to explain itself. What could easily be threatening becomes strangely tender: less warning, more revelation.
