The Space They Made
Mixed-media collage, 8.5" x 6" x 3"

A vintage cabinet card forms the foundation — a formal group portrait, the kind taken to mark belonging: a school, a congregation, a town. The young women have been lifted free of the frame and mounted above it, stepping forward into raised relief, finished in resin. Beneath them, the photograph itself has been torn open, the gap lined with a handwritten letter from the 1930s — its blue ink cursive surfacing where the image gives way. A typed strip of text settles into that opening: the space they made.

The whole piece rests on a wood box, giving the work physical depth to match its layered history. What's left isn't a record of a single moment so much as a question about who gets remembered standing in the frame, and who gets remembered by what they left in writing.
