King of Hearts

A Queen of Spades and King of Hearts collide across a painted, raised surface — the two cards built up in dimension, gestural acrylic strokes spilling underneath them like landscape or weather. The King's arm extends outward, raised above the surface, holding a heart cut directly from his own card and pressed toward the Queen — the suit literally given away, offered as the only currency a deck of cards has to spend.
It's a piece about the cost of the gesture as much as the gesture itself: what's left of the King once the heart is gone, and whether the Queen of Spades — armored, unmoved by suit or sentiment — was ever going to take it.
